Okay, so I saw this Prada Galleria Saffiano bag the other day, the special edition one, and I just thought, “I gotta have it!” But you know, the price tag was a bit too much for me. So, I decided to get crafty and make my own version of it. I mean, how hard could it be, right?

First things first, I needed to gather all the stuff I’d need. I went online and looked up a bunch of pictures of the bag to get a good idea of what it looked like from all angles. Then, I made a list of materials: some good quality leather that felt kind of like the Saffiano texture, lining fabric, thread, needles, a zipper, some metal rings, and a few other bits and bobs. It took me a couple of days, but I found pretty much everything at the local craft and fabric stores.

The next step was to create a pattern. I took the measurements from a bag I already had that was about the same size and started sketching out the different pieces on some large sheets of paper. It was a bit of trial and error, to be honest. I cut out the paper pieces and taped them together to see how the bag would shape up. After a few adjustments, I had a pattern that looked decent enough.

Then came the real work – cutting the leather. I laid out my pattern pieces on the leather and carefully cut them out with a sharp cutter. Man, cutting leather is way tougher than cutting regular fabric! I had to take breaks because my hand started to cramp up. Once all the leather pieces were cut, I moved on to the lining fabric. I used the same pattern, just made the pieces a tiny bit smaller so they’d fit nicely inside the leather shell.

Sewing everything together was the most challenging part. I started with the lining, which was relatively easy. I used my sewing machine and it went pretty smoothly. But sewing the leather was a whole different story. I had to use a special needle and go really slow to make sure the stitches were even and strong. I broke a couple of needles along the way, and my fingers were sore from pushing the needle through the thick leather. But I kept at it, and slowly but surely, the bag started to take shape.

I attached the zipper to the top opening, which was tricky but manageable. Then, I added the metal rings to the sides for the shoulder strap. The handles were probably the most complicated part to sew on, but I took my time and managed to get them attached securely. I also made a little inside pocket for my phone and keys – gotta have those!

  • Gather materials: leather, lining, thread, needles, zipper, metal rings, etc.
  • Create a pattern by sketching and adjusting based on an existing bag.
  • Cut the leather and lining fabric using the pattern.
  • Sew the lining together.
  • Sew the leather pieces together, slowly and carefully.
  • Attach the zipper, metal rings, and handles.
  • Add an inside pocket.

After many hours of work, and a few frustrated sighs, my remake of the Prada Galleria Saffiano bag was finally finished! It’s not exactly like the original, of course, but I’m pretty proud of how it turned out. It’s got that classic style I love, and it’s actually quite sturdy. I’ve been using it for a few weeks now, and it’s holding up great.

This whole experience taught me a lot about crafting and sewing, and it gave me a new appreciation for all those designer bags out there. They might be expensive, but a lot of work goes into making them! Now, whenever I see a fancy bag, I’ll remember the time I made my own, and it’ll feel a little extra special.
